Nature By Narrative
Nature by Narrative: Exploring Human Intervention and Connection on the Carr Villa Trail is a visual exploration that aims to both examine and question the authenticity of my relationship to nature as dictated by a prescribed path. I have repeatedly walked the Carr Villa walking trail to the summit of Legges Tor on the Ben Lomond plateau and used it as a foundation from which to explore human connection presented by the trail and the navigational markers installed upon it. The project is based on my own experiences of the natural world, specifically walking trails, and is used as a vehicle to re-imagine the complex ‘landscape’ genre from a visual perspective through the use of varying media and text as modes of emotive representation.
Nature by Narrative was my 2012 BCA Honours project and included varying forms of media including sculpture, writing, photography, video and sound. The 'Poles' were temporarily installed on the summit of Ben Lomond and documented. Each pole was laser-etched etched with either location and elevation data or written text, or a combination of the two. The final 'Pole' encountered along the walk contained 'A Letter' - an orginal continuous text written specifically for the project and etched top to bottom on all four sides.
